About the museum
The Gratian local heritage society (Hembygdsföreningen Gratian) was founded in 1961 and has since then helped document many events in the district and preserve objects. The association's museum is in the former school residence (skolhemmet) in Umnäs, the church village of the Gratian district at the foot of Gardfjället, a short distance west of Slussfors.
The museum shows the cultural history of the district, with a focus on Sámi culture and the settler era. Some of the exhibitions are intended to be fairly permanent, among them the life of the settlers, a school museum about Umnäs school and a history room documenting the cultural history of the district. The collection also holds many newspaper clippings, including death notices from the area, which can be useful for genealogical research.
