About the museum
Charlotte Berlin was born in Ystad in 1841 and lived there until her death in 1916. She worked as a piano teacher and was skilled at investing money in shares, which made her fortune grow. In 1881 she bought the house on Dammgatan and moved in together with her faithful maid, Ingrid Tullberg.
Charlotte Berlin was interested in interior decoration and in what was happening in her own time. She acquired novelties such as the telephone and linoleum floor coverings, and she collected clocks, among other things. She wanted her collections and her home to become a museum, and after her death this wish was fulfilled. The museum opened in 1918.
Today Charlotte Berlins museum is run by Ystad Municipality. The visitor steps into a home from the late 1800s, with, among other things, the large room with a bookcase and piano, where a portrait of Charlotte, painted by Albert Larsen in 1936, hangs above the piano. The museum has a seasonal opening and is shown on guided tours. There is also a small museum shop.
