About the museum
The Franciscan monastery in Ystad was founded in 1267 by the knight Holmger and his wife Katarina, and the monastery church was dedicated to Saint Peter. At its height some 15–25 brothers lived in the monastery, who lived on donations from noble families and on the herring trade. The buildings grew during the 14th and 15th centuries with a choir, side aisles, a bell tower, monastery wings and a gatehouse.
In 1532 Ystad’s mayor and council took over the monastery, and the brothers were driven out. The church became a parish church, and the eastern wing became a hospital and later a grain store. In 1876 the town decided to demolish the store, but the decision was reversed after efforts by, among others, headmaster L. M. Neuman and a donation from Jacob Lachmann.
The monastery wing was restored in 1909–1912 and opened in 1912 as a museum and library. The monastery church was handed over to the town in 1962 and reconsecrated in 1967. Today Klostret i Ystad is the town’s cultural history museum, with collections of objects and photographs and monastery gardens. It is run by Ystad Municipality with support from Region Skåne.
