About the museum

Ystads Frivillige Bergnings-Corps, known as Frivilligan, was founded in 1839 as a rescue corps to assist the regular fire brigade at fires. It was founded by customs inspector Johan Wilhelm Fåhræus after a stable fire in the town, and it is Sweden's oldest volunteer fire brigade. In 1850 the corps received its own fire pump, the Berghman pump, named after its donor, and then also became a fire brigade. The corps' band was added in 1948.

The museum is in the Brandkårshemmet (fire brigade house) at Bäckahästgränd and preserves firefighting equipment from earlier times, from mops and leather buckets to radio sets and fire pumps. In the first room stands the Berghman pump from 1850. The museum also has villa fire pumps, a motor pump from 1936, alarm cabinets and uniforms showing the development from white frock coat and card hat to blue tunic and polished helmet. The museum was founded and built up by Sven Bergman.

The corps also has four older vehicles, among them a 1931 Ford and 1933 and 1939 Volvos, which are used in summer for city tours and Wallanderturer (Wallander tours). On the first Saturday in August the corps celebrates its anniversary with a pump parade on Stortorget.
