About the museum
Ystads konstmuseum was founded in 1936 on the initiative of Ystads konstförening (Ystad Art Society), which had been formed in 1929. The museum began as a deposit museum with works from the Nationalmuseum, and its own collection grew up around these. The building is functionalist and was inaugurated in connection with the Fritidsutställningen (Leisure Exhibition) of 1936.
The collection consists of several thousand works and focuses on art connected with Skåne and partly Denmark, from the late 19th century to the present. The museum also has a large collection of artists’ books from the 1940s onwards, based on the archive of the artist Leif Eriksson.
The building houses exhibition halls and smaller rooms, a café, a museum shop and two studios for art education. The museum is run by Ystad municipality with support from Region Skåne and the Swedish Arts Council, and it is the lead organisation for the regional project Bästa Biennalen. Ystad’s tourist office is next to the entrance.
