About the museum

Dyktankhuset (the Diving Tank House) was built by the Navy in the 1930s as a diving laboratory and training site for submarine crews, and the house lies on Djurgården between Vrak (the Museum of Wrecks) and the Vasa Museum. The diving tank and the laboratory remain as they were left when operations closed in 1979.

The house was about to be demolished, and the Svensk Dykerihistorisk Förening (Swedish Diving History Society) was formed on 23 May 1979 with the aim of saving it for posterity. In 1997 the Maritime Museum began renting the house from Kungliga Djurgårdens förvaltning (the Royal Djurgården Administration) to renovate it and, together with the society, to collect objects from diving history. The house and collections were opened to the public for the first time at the Skärgårdsmässan (Archipelago Fair) in May 1999.

Today Dyktankhuset is run by the society together with the Swedish National Maritime and Transport Museums, of which Vrak is part, and is staffed by volunteers. Visitors can see the old diving tank and laboratory, the very first water scooter, heavy diving equipment and many other objects from the history of diving.
