About the museum
Enköpings museum shows the municipality's cultural history from the Stone Age to almost the present day. The museum is housed in a building from 1783–1786, which the merchant Nils Svensson Stahre had built as a merchant's house and dwelling. In 1796 the house became the town hall (rådhus), and it has later also been used as a school and police station.
Since 1908 the Sydvästra Upplands kulturhistoriska förening (South-West Uppland Cultural History Society) has worked to highlight the history of the district. The society collected objects and showed them in the old savings bank building at Tullgatan 16. In 1979 it was decided that the municipality should run its own museum and take over the society's collections. Work on the exhibitions in the present house began in 1985, and in December 1987 Enköpings museum opened to the public.
Today there are permanent exhibitions on two floors, from prehistoric finds and medieval Enköping with its Franciscan friary to industrialisation, town life around the turn of the 20th century and the town's military history. The museum also shows temporary exhibitions, works with cultural-historical advice for the municipality and the public, and collaborates with preschools, schools and associations.
