About the museum
Fotevikens Museum grew out of interest in Viking ships found in the bay of Foteviken and in the Battle of Fotevik in 1134. The foundation formed in 1987 first planned a maritime history museum, but chose instead to create a living reconstruction of a village from the late Viking Age and early Middle Ages. The museum opened in 1995.
The Viking village is based on archaeological finds and shows what a village or a small town could look like around the year 1000. It lies on a large, scenic site by the coast with many houses, craft buildings and large halls. During the visit, Viking characters may appear in the village and tell tales and legends, and plays from Norse mythology are performed at the theatre place.
The museum is also the municipal museum of Vellinge Municipality and is part of the Fotevikens Kulturcenter (Fotevik Culture Centre). During the season there are, among other things, a Viking show, a warriors' school, bow shooting, axe throwing, guided tours and a large Viking market at the end of June.
