About the museum
Skåre fishing hamlet by Skåre harbour east of Höllviken owes its origin to fishing. During the Hanseatic era ships came here to collect salted herring, and in the 1700s the first permanent settlement arose. Since then the fishing hamlet has been shaped by the sea and its gifts.
Skåre Fiskemuseum is run by Skåre Byalag (Skåre village association) and focuses on old fishing methods, above all eel fishing and herring fishing. There are old implements, and visitors can see how nets were mended (bödade), that is, repaired. In the past the nets were made of cotton. Outside the museum stands a tar cauldron that was used when the nets were tarred.
Through the museum the village association wants to preserve knowledge of the hard work that formed the basis of the fishing hamlet. During the summer the museum has shown, among other things, a hot-bulb engine (tändkulemotor) that drives a wood splitter (vedklyv), and the village association also arranges other activities in the fishing hamlet.
