About the museum

Femörefortet is a light coastal artillery installation blasted into the rock on the peninsula of Femöre, south-east of Oxelösund. The installation, known as Batteri OD, was built in 1961–1964 following the defence decision of 1958 as one of 30 similar batteries along Sweden's coast, and it formed part of the wartime organisation from 1966. Its purpose was to protect the strategically important harbour of Oxelösund, which until 1960 had almost no effective defence.

The armament consisted of three 7.5 cm turret guns, connected by a central tunnel just over 450 metres long. The crew numbered about 70, and the fort could sustain itself with electricity and water for a month. It contained a fire-control centre, quarters, a kitchen, workshops and an infirmary. The fort was in use until 1997 and was managed by the Swedish Armed Forces until 2003.

Since 2003 Femörefortet has been run as a museum by the Föreningen Femörefortet (Femöre Fort Association), and more than 158,000 people have visited it. All visits are guided: after an introduction the guide goes up the hill to the radar and one of the guns, and then down into the underground tunnels with the quarters, the fire-control centre with its periscope, and the lower part of a gun.
