About the museum
Koppartorp was for several hundred years the centre of mining in the Tunaberg area south-west of Nyköping. Copper, iron, cobalt and manganese were quarried here, and over eighty different minerals have been found in the area. Quarrying went on, with interruptions, from the Middle Ages until the 20th century, and over time a small mining village grew up around the mine pits.
The environment with preserved buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries has been restored with the help of EU funds. As early as 1948 a local company donated part of the old mining village to the district, and Tunabergs hembygdsförening (Tunaberg Local Heritage Society), formed in 1949, has since looked after the buildings and the area.
The mining museum is in the old mine storehouse in Koppartorp and shows how the ore was extracted and processed, and under what hard conditions the miners lived and worked. Next to it is the homestead (hembygdsgården) with a summer café and a gallery.
