About the museum
Fjärilshuset was founded in 1989 and has been run since 2006 by Mikael Odell and his family. The operation describes itself as a living museum where visitors enter a warm tropical environment with free-flying butterflies, fish, frogs, turtles and many other animals.
In 2013 Haga Ocean was built with the large shark tank. The tank is 30 metres long and holds 1.2 million litres of water, and its purpose is to show the public what the sea can look like at a depth of seven to eight metres, with colourful reef fish and reef sharks.
In the tropical butterfly room visitors can follow the butterflies’ life cycle from egg, larva and pupa to adult butterfly. The house receives over 700 pupae every week, all year round. Fjärilshuset also takes in students on work placements, who receive guidance from the house’s zoologist.
