About the museum
Olle Olsson Hagalund was a naive painter who lived his whole life in Hagalund in Solna. He was born and grew up in the house at Furugatan 3, which his maternal grandfather had built at the end of the 19th century, and he continued to live there with his wife Maja and daughter Lena. He early on added the name Hagalund to his signature to show pride in where he came from, and he represented Sweden at the Venice Biennale in 1942.
When Sweden was modernised in the mid-20th century, many small shack areas were demolished, and Hagalund is one of the best-known examples. Olle Olsson fought until the very end to preserve the area, and thanks to his art and advocacy the block with his home has survived.
Today the turquoise wooden house is a museum run by the City of Solna. The artist’s home is furnished with original interiors from the 1930s to the 1970s, and in the small rooms it is as if time has stood still. On the ground floor paintings are shown, along with archive photographs and models of old Hagalund, and up a staircase is the veranda with the studio where his last, unfinished painting is displayed. In the block there is also a gallery, a ceramics workshop and a small sculpture park.
