About the museum

There has been a forge at Nohab since 1847, when Nydqvist & Holm AB started its operations in Trollhättan. The present forge was brought into use in 1935. Here, among other things, connecting rods for locomotives, rings, axles and tools were made. The equipment consists of three air hammers of 500–800 kilos, two smaller hammers, several furnaces and a large number of templates and tools.

When operations were closed down in 1993, Trollhättan Municipality bought all the fittings to save the forge. Since then Innovatum Science Center has run it as a working-life museum with guided visits, forging activities and opening to visitors during the summer season. The environment remains in the condition it was in when production fell silent.

The forge is still alive. Several working artist-smiths have their studios and workshops here, and visitors can feel the heat from the fire and see glowing iron being shaped. For families there is a children’s forge where children can create in clay, inspired by the forge’s shapes and tools. Groups can also book forging together with experienced smiths.
