About the museum

Kanalmuseet opened in 1984 and is located in a former office building at the upper lock in Trollhättan, about a hundred years old. The museum tells the story of the Trollhätte Canal and its lock system, and of the people who built, lived and worked there.

The exhibition shows, among other things, around fifty boat models, an old working dinghy and a diving suit with underwater tools from the 19th century. There are also recreated environments with a smithy and a joiner's workshop, as well as the Kaptenens salong (captain's saloon) in red plush from the cargo ship Vielle Montagne III. The canal company's guest books from 1796 onwards can also be seen.

A film about the history of the lock keepers and their importance for the region is shown every full hour after a short introduction. The activity is run by Folkuniversitetet (Folk University) with support from Västra Götalandsregionen (Västra Götaland Region).
