About the museum

Gammelgården in Hunnebostrand is run by the local heritage society Sotenäsgillet and consists of several older buildings, some of which have stood on the site and some of which have been moved there. The building that now houses the museum is the former militia dwelling, built in 1739 and repaired in 1833, when the roof was raised. It holds around 1,200 objects that show life in the district over several centuries, and the interior gives an impression of how a home could look in the 18th century.

On the site there is also an old barn, which was already rebuilt in the late 1920s into a theatre barn and storytelling hall (sagohall). The folk-school teacher Osvald Karlsson, one of the founders of Sotenäsgillet, wrote saga plays about the Viking Age of Sotenäs, which were performed outdoors, and the first play in the storytelling hall was given in 1930. The boathouse, partly built of wreck timber (vraktimmer), is considered one of Bohuslän’s oldest surviving ones and probably dates from the late 17th century. The Möhällern barn has been moved here from Tossene and has an unusual construction in which the outer wall is carried by two large granite blocks. Among other things, it stores a manor carriage, some sleighs and Sotenäs’s oldest threshing machine.

Next to it is the Stonecutters’ Museum (Stenhuggerimuseet), run by the same association, and in the manor building there is a youth hostel and a café.
