About the museum
Stenhuggerimuseet is in an old quarry in Hunnebostrand, where stone was quarried in the 1930s to the 1950s. In 1863 the red, medium- to coarse-grained granite was discovered in the mountains around the village, and it proved suitable as large stones and building stone. In the winter of 1976 Lahälla was closed down, and a stonemasonry era of 113 years came to an end.
Many stone workers donated their tools to Sotenäsgillet (the Sotenäs Association), and volunteers, led by the stonemason Harry Karlsson, took on the task of saving the cultural heritage. In spring 1992 Sotenäsgillet proposed to Bohusläns museum and Sotenäs Municipality that a museum be placed in Hunnebostrand, next to Gammelgården. The museum was inaugurated on 6 June 1993 at Klôvan.
On the site there is a smithy, a hewers’ shed, exhibition rooms and a viewing hall. Visitors can see tools, machines and photographs from the stonemasonry era, learn about the importance of the smithy and walk around the old quarry. The museum is run by Sotenäsgillet, and the viewings are led by guides.
