About the museum

Klörups häradshäkte was built in 1809 and is colloquially called “Tjyvaholled”. It is the only building that today recalls the village's role as the court place of Skytts härad (Skytt hundred), where courts were held from 1690 to 1905. The village's location, where the Malmö–Ystad highway crossed the Lund–Trelleborg road, made it a natural court site, with a coaching inn and stagecoach traffic.

Three times a year, regular courts were held, usually for about six days. The accused were fetched from the prison in Malmö and held in the lock-up while the court was in session. The building retains its original layout, with a lock-up section and a jailer's dwelling separated by a porch. The cells are divided into a men's cell and a women's cell, with double wooden doors and barred windows. The jailer Anders Persson served here from 1851 to 1905.

The building was designed by county master builder (länsbyggmästare) Johan Nicolaus Knoch. Skytts härads hembygdsförening (Skytt hundred local heritage association) received the lock-up as a gift in 1943 and restored it in 1963–1964, when it also became a listed building. The lock-up section is furnished as a museum, the jailer's dwelling is furnished as in Anders Persson's time, and the bell tower of the courthouse was moved here in 1993. A small herb garden with fruit trees has been recreated by the house.
