About the museum
The Hälleforsnäs ironworks was founded in 1659 for casting cannons. Operations began on a small scale, with employees who lived in crofts and cottages around the site. Only in the 19th century, when the Celsing family had taken over, did the foundry grow into a modern industry and the community take shape. The railway was built and the station was placed close to the farm Näs, after which the place took its present name from Hellefors-Näs.
Many of the buildings around the works were added during the Celsing era, partly with the help of the architect Johan Fredrik Åbom. The works moved from cannons to agricultural machinery, wood stoves, fireplace stoves, pots and frying pans, and the milestones around Hälleforsnäs are cast at the works. In the early 20th century radiators were the largest product; from the 1920s to the 1980s it was pipe fittings, and thereafter components for industry and the railway.
Hälleforsnäs Gjuterimuseum shows workplaces, tools, objects made at the works through the centuries, photographs and much more. The museum is run by a non-profit association with around a hundred members. On the site there is also Kolhuset, a building of slag stone from the early 19th century with a freestanding timber roof structure, which in summer is used for theatre and music.
