About the museum
Skräddartorp lies up on Skathöjden with views over Skatviken and the lake Torrvarpen, roughly three to five kilometers from Grythyttan on the road towards Loka brunn. The farm began as a new settlement in the first half of the 17th century, with roots in Finnish forest culture (skogsfinska kulturen), and for a long time it was home to several generations of miners. The main farm buildings, including the dwelling house and the portlid (gate building), form an enclosed farmyard, and the main building has wall and ceiling paintings from the early 18th century.
The farm consists of 14 buildings, all still standing on their original sites, including the smithy, the smoke sauna (rökbastun), the ria (drying shed) and the so-called hemlighuset (the privy). A loft storehouse from Brunnshyttan has been moved here but placed to one side so as not to disturb the farm’s original layout. The storehouses hold a farm museum with objects and vehicles from the 18th and 19th centuries.
The farm’s last owner, Wiktor Ohlsson (1897–1968), bequeathed it to Grythyttans hembygdsförening (Grythyttan Local Heritage Association). Today the farm is shown in summer with a guide, and in the old cowshed and hayloft there is a coffee room. The association arranges, among other events, a midsummer celebration, the Hembygdsgårdarnas dag (Local Heritage Farms’ Day), a dahlia exhibition and a cultural heritage day on site.
