About the museum
The Kokboksmuseum (Cookbook Museum) opened on 17 March 2000 in Måltidens Hus (House of Food) in Grythyttan and is regarded as the first museum of cookbooks in the Nordic countries. It is run by Örebro University, whose education programmes in food knowledge and gastronomy are at Campus Grythyttan.
The museum is housed in a specially built black cube in Måltidens Hus. The architect Magnus Silfverhielm wanted to create a place of pilgrimage for people interested in the culture of cooking. The furnishings and choice of materials refer to the Swedish cookbook author and restaurateur Tore Wretman, whose books are an important part of the collection.
The collection consists of around a thousand works, mainly books but also pamphlets and menus, on food, drink and cooking. Among the objects is a copy of the oldest printed cookbook, Platina's De honesta voluptate et valetudine, from the 15th century, and books by Cajsa Warg.
