About the museum
Sveriges kurortsmuseum is at Loka Brunn in Hällefors Municipality and tells the story of Swedish spa towns and mineral springs. The museum opened in 1995 and is housed in buildings from the 18th century. It is owned by Stiftelsen Kungliga Gyttjebad- och Brunnsanstalten Loka (the Loka Royal Mud Bath and Spa Foundation) and is one of three museums in Europe that deal with spa culture.
The spring at Loka Brunn was already a resting place for pilgrims on their way to Nidaros in the Middle Ages, and organized spa activity began in 1720. The springs were small communities in miniature, with a strict class structure and their own regulations, and both the poorest and royalty came here. King Adolf Frederick wrote in 1761 that his migraine had been cured here, and his son Gustav III later had a house of his own built on the site.
The museum is housed in the buildings Prästgården (the Vicarage), Alkvettern, Rockesholm and Kungsköket (the King’s Kitchen). Visitors can see the royal privilege letters from 1759, how the different social classes lived during their stay at the spa, a doctor’s surgery and a pharmacy. In the Prästgården there are bathtubs from the 18th century, as well as medical equipment and exercise apparatus, and the museum also shows a photo exhibition.
