About the museum

Krångede power station on the Indalsälven river was built in 1931–1936 and during the 1940s was the country’s largest power station. It was the first transmission of electric power from Norrland to Central Sweden. The Krångede rapids downstream of lake Gesunden form the largest connected rapids complex in the Indalsälven, and the water rights were bought in 1897 by the inventor Gustaf de Laval before being sold on.

The Krångede Power Station Museum was built in 1996 and is run by the non-profit Krångede Museiförening (Krångede Museum Association), which is owned by Ragunda Municipality, Fortum, Krångede-Dövikens village association and Ragunda Local Heritage Association. The museum wants to bring together the Krångede of yesterday and today and show how people lived in and outside their work during the power station era.

In the museum, visitors can listen to stories, watch film and see a photo exhibition, and get a picture of working conditions in the 1930s for hydropower navvies, rock blasters and divers. Among other things, you can blast and try on an old diving suit. Parts of the exhibition are outdoors, with a photo exhibition in the old log-driving chute. By the river is the flottarkoja (log-drivers’ cabin), where kolbullar (potato dumplings) are served on certain summer days, and by the museum there is a play park with water play and a garden railway.
