About the museum
Nässjö kvarn (mill) lies by the Nässjöån river, which runs the last five kilometres down towards the Faxälven river and passes a rapids with a drop of about 80 metres. For a long time several brook mills, a saw, an eel trap (ålkista), a roof-shingle planer (takspånshyvel) and a smithy have stood in the rapids. In the mid-19th century works owner (brukspatron) Fittinghof had a larger mill built, but it burned down in the early 1880s.
A few years later a new mill was built with two pairs of millstones, a saw and a shaving planer (spånthyvel), and three turbines powered the operations. After a bankruptcy in 1906, an electricity company was formed around 1910, which bought the plant and built the municipality's first power station in the mill building. By Christmas 1913 electric light was supplied to Ramsele. According to a contract, the villagers had the right to grind and saw for their own needs free of charge.
Graningeverken bought the mill with its power station and saw in 1935, and operations ceased in the mid-1960s. The building was then in poor condition, but it was taken over by Ramsele Municipality in the mid-1970s. Today a new turbine in the power station again supplies electricity, and in summer grain meal is still ground in the mill.
