About the museum
Ljungbyheds militärhistoriska museum (Ljungbyhed Military History Museum) was inaugurated on 5 June 1998. The main building is the old hussar mess from the 1860s, which after several years of restoration was returned to its 1880s condition. There, exhibitions are shown that mainly tell of the activities, equipment and environments of the army units. The library and office are in an old administration building, and in an adjacent barracks a section on the development of flying at Ljungbyhed opened in 2016.
Since the late 1600s, infantrymen, dragoons and hussars have trained on the Ljungby and Bonnarp heaths. In the later part of the 1800s the site was one of Europe's largest military training grounds. At Ljungbyhed the first flying trials with Swedish-built aircraft were also carried out in 1910, Thulin's flying school operated here in 1915–1920, and the Krigsflygskolan (Military Flying School, F5) trained some 5,200 future combat pilots from 1926 to 1997 before it was closed down in 1998.
The museum is run by a non-profit association, which also manages an extensive picture database and a library suitable for research. The museum is located in a park landscape at Ljungbyhed Park, the former wing site.
