About the museum

Mjölby hembygdsgård (Mjölby Heritage Farm) lies on an islet in the Svartån river in central Mjölby. The museum and houses are owned by Mjölby Municipality and run voluntarily by Mjölby hembygdsförening (Mjölby Local Heritage Society). The buildings and collections show the town's history from the 1700s to the present day.

The large museum building was erected on the site in the 1860s and has among other things been a distillery and a brewery; the local heritage society began to use the building in 1965. On the lower floor there is a laundry and a smithy. The middle floor houses, among other things, a shop, a kitchen, a shoemaker's workshop, a doctor's surgery, textiles, an intarsia room, Mjölby's music history and objects from the town's industries. In the Vagnsmuseet (Carriage Museum), which the society took over in 1983, there are, among other things, a fire brigade museum, carriages, sledges, bicycles and skis.

A special collection shows intarsia, which is a hallmark of Mjölby's industrial history. Knut Werner Dahlström founded Mjölby Decoupeurfabrik (Mjölby Fretwork Factory) in 1909, and in 1917 the company became Mjölby Intarsia. In the 1930s it supplied large inlays to, among others, passenger ships and a bank palace. Several older houses have been moved here, for example the kiosk from Mjölby station, which is now the museum's entrance building.
