About the museum

Skänninge town hall was built in 1770 to designs by the architect Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz. Here were the town’s governing and judicial authorities and a lock-up (häkte), and the building has also housed a school, a police station, a fire station and a telegraph office. After several rebuilds the house received its present appearance in 1917 under the direction of the architect Carl Westman.

Since 1971 the local heritage society S:ta Ingrids Gille (St Ingrid’s Guild) has been responsible for the town hall’s historical exhibitions. The museum shows the history of the town and the town hall with texts, pictures and models. Finds from archaeological excavations are shown together with sculptures by Gottfrid Larsson and Carin Nilson.

In the town hall there is also a local history library with a large collection of newspaper clippings and bound newspaper volumes, and in the guild’s archive there are many photographs and documents about Skänninge’s history. The town hall is also known for the elephant riot of 1806, when an elephant was brought into the building and a riot followed.
