About the museum
The Manifattura dei Marinati is a large production complex in Comacchio devoted to the traditional processing of eel. It still operates for a few months a year and, at the same time, is a museum that tells the story of the processing cycle of valley fish.
The route includes the Sala dei Fuochi (Fire Room) with its twelve chimneys, where the eel is grilled; the Calata, the canal where fishermen’s boats used to moor; and the Sala degli Aceti (Vinegar Room) with vats and barrels for marinating. Between November and December the chimneys are lit to grill and marinate the eel using the traditional method; in autumn, the processing of anchovies and sand smelts can also be observed.
The visit lasts about an hour and ends with the chance to buy typical products in the Food Lab, a Slow Food presidium.
