About the museum
Cafè Badilatti in Zuoz is considered the oldest coffee roastery in the canton of Graubünden. Its history begins in 1912 with Giuseppe Badilatti’s grocery shop in the village, where the first “Cafè Badilatti” was sold. Later, Daniel Badilatti concentrated entirely on roasting and gave up the shop. In the 1990s the “Chesa Cafè” roastery was established, where the Caferama coffee museum was set up in 1995. Today the family business is run by the fourth generation.
The museum tells how the coffee bean was discovered and came to Europe, and what role Engadine and Poschiavo coffee traders played in this. A walk-through explains the cultivation and processing of coffee, presents more than 80 species of coffee trees and shows how coffee affects the body.
Historical photos, paintings and exhibits illustrate the significance coffee already had centuries ago and how roasting has been refined over time. Because the boiling point is lower at 1,716 meters above sea level, roasting in Zuoz takes longer – up to about 20 minutes – and on a favorable wind the smell of freshly roasted coffee can be noticed throughout the village. At an experience station, visitors can put together their own coffee blend, and in the in-house café they can taste the coffee with Engadine pastries.
