The exhibition presents Carbone, the leading portraitist of mid-seventeenth-century Genova, and shows, through portraits, lace and jewellery, the shift from austere Spanish fashion to the more fluid and decorated French style.

At the centre is the previously unpublished portrait of Julia Lavarello Anselmo, painted by Vincenzo Irolli in 1907 and coming from the Giorgio Baratti collection. The exhibition tells of the economic, cultural and maritime ties of the Lavarello-Anselmo family between Genova and Buenos Aires in the Belle Époque.
